Halloween Choc Hazelnut Mousse Graveyards
2013-10-20

Looking for a spooky sweet treat this Halloween? These Choc Hazelnut Mousse Graveyards are rich, decadent, and delightfully eerie. They’re surprisingly easy to make, and kids will love decorating their own creepy cups of chocolate dirt and edible tombstones.
Ingredients
Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse
- 200g dark chocolate
- 3 eggs, separated
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup thickened cream
- 1/4 cup hazelnut spread (like Nutella)
Graveyard Toppings
- Crushed chocolate cookies (for “dirt”)
- Chocolate biscuit or cookie “tombstones” (e.g. Milanos or Tim Tams)
- White writing icing for decorating
- Gummy worms or Halloween sprinkles (optional)
Method
1. Make the Mousse
Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in short bursts in the microwave. Stir until smooth. Let cool slightly.
In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks, vanilla, and sugar until pale and creamy. Stir in the melted chocolate and hazelnut spread.
In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. In another, whip the cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture, followed by the whipped cream. Divide between 4-6 small glasses or jars.
Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
2. Decorate the Graveyards
Once the mousse is set, sprinkle crushed cookies over each mousse cup to create a layer of “dirt.”
Pipe spooky messages on your cookie tombstones using white icing — try “RIP,” “BOO,” or little skull drawings. Stick one into each mousse cup.
Add gummy worms or Halloween sprinkles to bring the scene to life (or… afterlife 👻).
🎃 Tip:
These can be made a day ahead and kept chilled until ready to serve. They make perfect party treats!
Enjoy and Happy Halloween! 🎃🪦🍫
