I love red wine, therefore I love the Barossa!

I love a red wine, and my favourite red wine region has to be the Barossa. Only an hour out of Adelaide, its a hub of great food and even better wine. There are a few places that stand out amongst the rest, here are my top 3 picks:

– Charles Melton

Amazing wines, beautiful vineyard, and they serve freshly baked bread whilst you taste the wines. One of the best vineyards to visit in the barossa. Notable wines are the Rose of Virginia, and the Kirche Shiraz (my fav)

– Rockford

You can’t buy this stuff in bottle shops in Sydney, so its even the more special if you visit. All of the wines here are outstanding, they are renowned for their basket press shiraz, but I also love a GSM and theirs is very good. Another noteworthy and special wine is the Allicante Bouchet. They have one of only two plantings of this grape in Australia, and trust me when I say its the best in Aus and its unlike any other wine you’ve tasted. Pink and slightly sweet, served chilled on a summers day its the best.

– Turkey Flat

Another great vineyard, they have plantings of lavender and an old truck sitting near the cellar door that’s picturesque. The shiraz is amazing as you would expect in the Barossa, as is the Rose. They also make a Pedro Ximenez which is amazing, the best way to finish a meal or accompany a dessert.

Of course there are many more great places in the Barossa, some noteworthy contenders are St Hallet – try the Frivola which is only available at the cellar door; Seppeltsfield – take the tour of the vineyard and its beautiful grounds; Bird in Hand – great Australian sparkling.

And don’t forget the food, they do great produce markets, and make sure you get to the Maggie Beer farm shop, so many yummy products.

Get a cheap flight, stay the weekend, drink and be merry…
